USDA unveils detailed watersheds report for Ag insights

USDA unveils detailed watersheds report for Ag insights

By Blake Jackson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has unveiled a new Watersheds report providing detailed agricultural data at a watershed level.

This comprehensive dataset complements the 2022 Census of Agriculture by offering a more granular perspective on agricultural operations within specific geographic boundaries.

The Watersheds report categorizes agricultural data based on six-digit Hydrologic Unit Codes (HUCs), allowing for in-depth analysis of farming practices and land use within defined watersheds. This level of detail is expected to be invaluable for researchers, policymakers, and agricultural stakeholders seeking to understand the environmental impact of agricultural activities.

“Most NASS publications show totals by state or county, but there is a need for agricultural statistics by watershed. This publication allows many people to see updated information for research and analysis,” said NASS Heartland Regional Director Brad Summa.

Missouri, for instance, is divided into four major watersheds, each further subdivided into smaller HUCs. The report provides data for each of these subdivisions, enabling a comprehensive analysis of agricultural trends within the state.

The Watersheds report is the first in a series of publications derived from the 2022 Census of Agriculture, highlighting the USDA’s commitment to providing data-driven insights to support the agricultural community and broader public interest.
