Workshop to support horse owners in Missouri

By Blake Jackson

Horse owners in the West Plains area are invited to a special evening workshop on December 3, 2024, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The event, located at 1376 Bill Virdon Blvd., West Plains, MO, aims to provide practical knowledge on cost-share programs, soil fertility management, and hay selection tailored specifically for equine needs.

The program will feature an informative line-up of experts. Christin Byrd, a Soil Conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), will discuss cost-share programs available to horse owners, helping them manage resources more effectively.

Haley Schwantz, an Agronomy Specialist from MU Extension, will cover soil testing basics, interpreting soil test results, and implementing practices to improve and maintain soil fertility for grazing or hay production.

Additionally, Elizabeth Picking, MU Extension’s Livestock Specialist, will provide insights into selecting appropriate hay for horses.

Elizabeth Picking's session will include tips on proper storage methods and guidance on sourcing high-quality hay for equine nutrition.

The event includes dinner and costs $10 per participant. Interested individuals can register or inquire further by contacting Elizabeth Picking at macconnelle@missouri.edu or 417-256-2391.

This workshop is made possible through a partnership with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, aiming to equip local horse owners with valuable tools for better land and livestock management.
