Farmers looking for sustainable forage options are invited to attend a free educational event hosted by the University of Missouri Extension on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
The program will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the MU Southwest Research, Extension & Education Center, located at 14548 HWY H, Mount Vernon, Missouri.
This field day is designed for producers who are seeking alternatives to traditional summer annual forages, particularly those affected by recurring summer drought.
The event will highlight the benefits of incorporating native warm-season grasses into cool-season pasture systems. These perennial forages not only provide high-quality feed but also offer long-term sustainability and resilience compared to annual planting.
Participants will have the opportunity to attend presentations, field demonstrations, and open discussions with MU Extension field specialists. Topics include selecting the right native grasses for individual farms, strategies for successful establishment, and techniques for producing and marketing native grass seed. In addition, attendees will learn about harvesting and cleaning seed to improve efficiency and quality.
The program is free of charge, with snacks and drinks available for participants. For more information, contact Caleb O’Neal at oneal@missouri.edu or 417-880-9406.
