Corn Farmers Can Test Lower Nitrogen Rates Safely

Corn Farmers Can Test Lower Nitrogen Rates Safely

By Blake Jackson

Midwestern corn farmers seeking to lower input costs and determine the best nitrogen rate for their fields can now participate in the N Rate Risk Protection program offered by Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI).

“Nitrogen fertilizer is a major cost for farmers, making it a key area for potential savings,” said Chelsea Ferrie, PFI’s senior field crops viability coordinator. “This program helps curious farmers test lower rates and find out what works best for their own farm.”

Farmers enrolled in the program will receive a phone consultation from a PFI agronomist to discuss their farm’s unique needs and determine feasible nitrogen reductions while maintaining yields.

All acres where nitrogen is reduced will earn $5 per acre, regardless of yield. If lowering nitrogen results in a yield loss, participants receive $30 per acre.

“Nitrogen is a vital crop nutrient, but excess can leach into waterways when it’s overused potentially harming wildlife, people and aquatic ecosystems,” Chelsea noted.

The program reduces financial risk, allowing farmers to experiment with lower nitrogen rates while saving money and enhancing farm resilience.

Eligibility requirements include: raising corn in 2026, reducing nitrogen by roughly 20 pounds per acre, managing corn conventionally (organic acres excluded), and farming in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, or southeastern South Dakota. Both new and experienced nitrogen-reduction farmers can participate.

Enrollment is open now through April 30, 2026. Full program details and the application form are available at practicalfarmers.org/n-rate-risk-protection-program. For questions or assistance, contact Chelsea Ferrie at (515) 232-5661 ext. 1040 or farmadmin@practicalfarmers.org.
