Grow your knowledge - master gardener training

By Blake Jackson

University of Missouri Extension will commence its Master Gardener training program for Buchanan County residents on August 12.

The training aims to equip participants with in-depth horticultural knowledge and turn them into valuable community resources for science-based gardening information.

According to MU Extension horticulturist Gwen Funk, “The Extension Master Gardener training will help you to gain new horticulture knowledge and become a community resource for science-based information.” Funk further emphasizes the program’s focus on the benefits of gardening and the opportunity to network with other gardening enthusiasts.

The training consists of 30 hours of in-person instruction held at the MU Extension Center in Buchanan County, located at 4125 Mitchell St., St. Joseph. In addition to this, participants will need to complete 30 hours of approved Master Gardener projects following the online portion of the course.

The curriculum covers a wide range of topics including plants and their environments, plant health and diseases, ornamentals, landscape design, soil introduction, home lawn care, fruit and vegetable gardening, woody ornamentals, pruning, plant propagation, integrated pest management, and environmental stewardship.

Classes will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays, running from August 12 to December 2. Limited scholarships are available. For more details, contact MU Extension in Buchanan County at 816-279-1691 or email Gwen Funk at gfunk@missouri.edu.
