Lawmakers support ethanol expansion nationwide

Lawmakers support ethanol expansion nationwide

By Jamie Martin

US lawmakers are considering a measure to allow year-round sales of E15, a higher-ethanol blend of gasoline containing 15% ethanol.

This initiative is part of a government spending bill aimed at preventing a potential shutdown. Currently, E15 sales are restricted during summer months due to environmental regulations.

The proposed measure would significantly boost the ethanol industry by expanding access to the higher blend nationwide, a goal pursued for over a decade.

This policy is supported by bipartisan efforts, with backing from the American Petroleum Institute and farm groups. The measure ensures continued access to lower-ethanol blends, preserving choices for consumers.

“E15 access year-round is a crucial step for our industry’s growth,” stated key ethanol advocates. The policy would potentially increase corn demand, benefiting farmers who supply a substantial portion of their harvest for biofuel production. With declining crop prices affecting revenues, this move could provide a significant boost.

While negotiations are ongoing, Congress aims to finalize the spending bill soon. If successful, this legislation could reshape the biofuel market, supporting renewable energy and enhancing agricultural sustainability.
