Attention Missouri cattle farmers! Learn about the benefits of warm-season grasses at a free farm tour on June 17th in Barry County.
The tour highlights three successful operations: Gene Cowherd and Rex & Jaron Myers (Purdy, MO) showcase their high-yielding native warm-season grass hayfields dominated by big bluestem and Indiangrass. These grasses offer heat and drought tolerance, perfect summer forage when cool-season pastures decline.
Mike and Janan Meier (Monett, MO) contribute their experience using improved crabgrass varieties for both grazing and hay production in their beef operation.
Tour participants will learn:
- Converting to warm-season grasses
- Management practices for established fields
- Nutrient needs
- Reduced endophyte exposure (fungus harmful to livestock)
- Improved summer grazing and hay production
Bonus: Enjoy a complimentary meal courtesy of the MU and Missouri Department of Conservation Native Grass Group.
