State Fair Community College (SFCC) has proudly announced the winners of its 2024–25 Writing Scholarship Awards. These annual scholarships are given to students who produce exceptional essays during English Composition and literature courses.
Sunny Morris of Stockton, California, received second place for her touching essay titled “Love Weighed Against Loss.” She was nominated by English instructor Randy Crawshaw and awarded a $250 scholarship. Sunny is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in agriculture and is an active member of the college’s Horticulture Club, where she continues to explore her passion for plants and farming.
The first-place honor went to Dametriuz Hernandez-Smith of Sedalia for his essay, “The Rhythm of Growth.” He received a $500 scholarship and is working toward an Associate of Arts degree. He was nominated by Dr. Amanda Drake, an SFCC English instructor. Dametriuz is also a dedicated member of the college’s TRiO program, which supports students in achieving academic success.
Each year, instructors at SFCC nominate essays from fall and spring semester writing courses. A special panel of faculty and staff then reviews and ranks these essays, choosing the most impressive submissions for scholarship recognition. The program encourages creativity and excellence in writing while helping students with their educational expenses.
These scholarships not only support talented writers but also shine a light on students who connect personal stories and agricultural themes through their writing.
SFCC continues to encourage academic success through programs that recognize hard work and storytelling talent. For more information about State Fair Community College’s programs and scholarships, students and families can visit www.sfccmo.edu.
